Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
