This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
