Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
