Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge certain rulings made by the official, echoing the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
